I adore this film. What a fun analysis! I do think she's a fabulously written heroine. Feminine, adoring, and very clever.

"… she is showing genuine respect for his intelligence and instincts."

I believe the greatest desire of all men is to be respected, and a man most wants respect from his wife.

In this example, I especially note that it seems she gave him respect before he had *earned* it (contrast this with the usual notion today that a man must earn respect before it is given). A man desires respect so much that he will, as they say, move mountains if a woman will respect him. At some level, this suggests that men *earn* respect after it is first freely given.

Brilliant essay on "Rear Window," a film I thought I was thoroughly familiar with, but, being a guy, I hadn't picked up any of the details & nuances you did. As it happens, I met my wife Beth in 2014 right after 15 years as a frequent overseas news correspondent in the developing world, therefore easily identified with the Jimmy Stewart character, & while none of our circumstances were the same, in hindsight it is very obvious that Beth merged her life into mine in much the same manner that your analysis prescribes. We have produced the Animals 24-7 news website together, which I had just started, since shortly after we met, & married about two months later.
